The business unit Life Science at the Fraunhofer-Institut
für Silicatforschung ISC in Würzburg researches and
develops materials based on hybrid polymers, ceramics
and glasses for biotechnological and medical applications.
Goal of our research is to improve the performance and the
functional variety of existing materials or to create completely
new functionalized materials.
The growing understanding of interaction mechanisms between
biological systems and artificial materials permanently leads to
innovative solutions to fit design and function to the specific
requirements. An important part of our business unit are the
hybrid polymer materials (ORMOCER®s), molecular inorganic/
organic composites, whose macroscopic properties can be adjusted
on the molecular scale. This fact reveals an enormous potential
as a material for biotechnological, dental, medical, and cosmetic
applications.
Currently bulk materials, composites, bioresorbable materials,
functionalizable (µ- and nano-) particles, (hollow-)fibers, mem-
branes, foils and sol-gel coatings are developed or already
successfully placed in the market.
